An orderly country to move to and an unforgiving one to improvise in. Austrian administration is clear, written down and applied consistently, which is excellent news for anybody who assembles the file in the right order and awkward for anybody who does not.

- Households moving to the Tyrol and Salzburg, where the winter access question is a planning matter rather than a detail.
The road out
Whatever the British origin, the load converges on the M20 and the Eurotunnel shuttle at Folkestone. Austria sits at the end of a long continental run, so the shuttle earns its place by leaving the driver a full set of hours rather than spending them on a deck.
From Calais the A16 and E40 run north-east into Belgium, then the E40 and E314 towards Aachen and the German border. The A4 and A3 carry the load past Cologne and Frankfurt, the A3 and A9 continue south-east for Nuremberg and Munich, and the A8 crosses into Austria at Salzburg. Vienna follows the A1 east; the Tyrol comes off earlier on the A93 and the Inn valley.

Austria grants relief on used household effects for somebody transferring their residence, and the Austrian system runs on the Meldezettel — the registration of your address with the local authority. It is straightforward to obtain and very difficult to work around.

Stairwells, Hausordnung and winter
Viennese Altbau buildings are handsome and their staircases were not designed around wardrobes. Expect narrow turns, expect a lift that predates your furniture if there is one at all, and expect an external lift through a window to be the practical answer for anything large.
The second Austrian particularity is the Hausordnung — the house rules of an apartment building, which commonly specify which hours a move may happen in and sometimes prohibit it on Sundays and public holidays entirely. Ask the landlord or the management the week you sign, not the week you move.
And in the Tyrol, winter is a genuine planning input rather than a caveat. A valley road that is fine in June is a different proposition in February with a loaded vehicle, and we establish that before quoting rather than negotiating it in a snowfall.

- Do we need the Meldezettel before the goods arrive?
- It makes everything simpler and it is commonly asked for. Where the timing will not allow it, goods can be collected and held in the UK while the registration goes through.
- Will our furniture get up a Vienna staircase?
- Some of it. Send photographs of the stairwell and the window openings at the viewing stage and we will tell you what needs to go up the outside instead.
- What is a Hausordnung?
- The house rules of an apartment building. They frequently set the hours a move may take place in and sometimes rule out Sundays and holidays altogether. It is worth asking early.
- Can you deliver to a Tyrolean village in winter?
- With planning. The access, the vehicle size and the conditions on the final stretch are settled before the quotation rather than in a valley with a full load.
- Are UK appliances worth taking?
- Austria runs the continental plug and voltage standard, so adaptors are needed and large white goods rarely repay the space over that distance.
- Dedicated or shared load?
- Austria is a long run, so sharing makes a real difference to the figure. Where a job start date cannot move, pay for a dedicated vehicle and keep the control.
